Igbinedion University, Okada (IUO), the first private university in Nigeria, was established in 1999. The University is located at Okada, headquarters of Ovia North-East Local Government Area, Edo State. The university was founded by Sir Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion CFR, a billionaire, philanthropist and a prominent Benin Chief.
Both the University’s graduate and undergraduate programs are accredited by the National Commission of Universities and the relevant professional bodies. The university has seven faculties, namely: Faculty of Law, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, Faculty of Business and Management Studies, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Engineering, and Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. It also has an enrollment of more than 5,000 students at the seven universities. The University is directed by the Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Professor Eghosa Osaghae.
The University has recorded several historic achievements, including the first private university to train physicians in sub-Saharan Africa and the first graduate from a private university in 2006 to earn a first-class at the highly competitive Nigerian Law School.
