Aston Villa have signed goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez from Premier League Arsenal for £ 17m.

The 28-year-old Argentine, who played 23 games last season and played in the Gunners’ FA Cup final against Chelsea, has signed a four-year contract.

Villa manager Dean Smith said Martinez will be a “key player for our club in the long run.”

“It’s rare to be able to buy a top-tier goalkeeper who hasn’t yet reached his maximum age,” he added.

“We know how well Arsenal rated him and we saw his outstanding performances last season in a top trophy-winning team.”

Martínez leaves Arsenal 10 years after joining as a youth team player in 2010.

Gunners manager Mikel Arteta decided that Bernd Leno would be his first choice this season and the German opened Arsenal’s opening game in the Premier League on Saturday, a 3-0 win in Fulham.

He is Villa’s third pick of the summer after forward Ollie Watkins signed from Brentford for a club-record fee and right-back Matty Cash arrived from Nottingham Forest.
