The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has said the Twitter suspension will be lifted if the social network company meets the required conditions.
After the extensive engagement, issues are addressed, and I have directed that suspension be lifted but only if conditions are met to allow our citizens to continue using the platform for business and positive engagement.”
It is reported that the president formed a presidential committee, in addition to a technical team to contact the management of the microblogging platform to explore the possibility of solving the problem that led to its suspension.
Buhari revealed this information during a pre-recorded broadcast of the 61st anniversary of Nigeria’s independence today in Abuja.
He noted that the Presidential Committee and the technical team had held talks with Twitter Inc. To resolve some of the proposed conditions that would ensure the reactivation of the platform.
Buhari said the issues to be resolved include national security and cohesion. Registration, physical attendance and representation; Fair taxes resolve disputes and local content.
The Nigerian president pondered why the platform was cut off from any other operations in the country on June 5, adding that the government acted to create an opportunity to tackle some of the social network company’s authoritarianism.
