On Saturday A major earthquake struck western Haiti and was felt across the Caribbean, where people fled their homes for fear that buildings would collapse.
The magnitude 7 earthquake struck 8 km (5 miles) from the town of Petit Trou de Nippes, about 150 km west of the capital Port-au-Prince, at a depth of 10 km, the United States Geological Survey said.

The country is still reeling from a magnitude 7 earthquake near the capital 11 years ago that killed dozens, if not hundreds of thousands of people, and destroyed swaths of buildings, leaving many homeless.

“Everyone is very scared. It has been years since such a big earthquake, ”said Daniel Ross, a resident of the city of Guantánamo, in eastern Cuba, adding that his house stood firm but the furniture shook.

The US Tsunami Warning System said there was no tsunami warning after the earthquake.
