The Islamic Republic of Iran has expressed its willingness to initiate direct flights to Nigeria.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States, with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, Geoffrey Onyeama, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran, Hossein Amir -Abdollahian said: “Iran- Mahan Airlines is fully willing, ready and able to establish direct flight routes from Tehran to Lagos.”

In his comments, Amir-Abdollahian said with a lot of hard work and concentration and in all seriousness that his country is pursuing further development of the Nigerian-Iranian relationship.

He added that the exchanges between the two countries are testimony that both countries were very serious, focused and motivated to improve relations.

He said: “Mr. Minister, as you know, both countries have very high capacities for mutual cooperation. But as you said, the level of trade and collaboration and cooperation between our two countries is not at a satisfactory level, particularly when we look at the level of political cooperation that fortunately exists between the two of us.

“And of course, as you know, Your Excellency, the private sector in our two respective countries is very interested in developing and advancing their ties between them.”

Amir-Abdollahian further said that in order to achieve the desired higher volume and commercial trade between the two countries, Iran is looking and studying the best way to establish a direct shipping route from Iran to Nigeria.

He said that Iran had no problems or challenges of any kind to completely remove any kind of obstacle that could hamper the progress of trade between the two countries.

The Iranian Foreign Minister also said at the beginning that Iran can do everything possible where necessary to remove or reduce any restricted tariffs that may exist, and subsequently Iran is ready and very willing to better analyze how to act quickly. on the elimination of such duties that exist between both countries.

Geoffrey Onyeama that his country is ready and willing to quickly review in depth the previous agreements between the two countries, activate them where possible and also establish a joint economic commission in Tehran as soon as possible.

The Nigerian Foreign Minister revealed Nigeria’s interest in deepening trade relations with Iran.

Onyeama reminded the Iranian Foreign Minister that Nigeria and Iran have excellent relations and said that Nigeria will be very happy with Amir-Abdollahian’s cooperation and commitment to further improve the relationship between the two countries.

The Minister said: “We are two large countries in our respective sub-regions, but unfortunately, the level of trade is not what it should be. And we should do much more. ”

However,  Onyeama said that Nigeria appreciates certain complexities of international financial systems and some of the obstacles, revealing that: “We were trying to also discuss how this should not disrupt our trade and how we can also work together to improve that aspect of our trade.
