(NDLEA) The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, recently issued a stern warning to Nigerian lawmakers in the National Assembly to desist from voting in support of cannabis legalization.
Brigadier General Buba Marwa, president of the NDLEA, stated that lawmakers are well aware that if they support the bill, pushing for the justification of marijuana use in the country, they cannot return to their constituencies.
On Friday, the head of the agency, who was in the presidential villa, Abuja, to brief President Muhammadu Buhari on the matter, refreshed the minds of Nigerians on the dangers of cannabis, also popularly known as marijuana or ganja.
The agency president said that the World Health Organization, WHO, reiterated points about the dangers of cannabis to the brain, emphasizing that it destabilizes and affects behavior, adding that Nigeria is the largest consumer of the substance.
However, While briefing House correspondents on the outcome of his meeting with President Buhari, the former Lagos State military administrator added to the WHO statements that cannabis also affects the organs of the body and at some moment, it can cause death.
