Hajia Asia, the wife of Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has claimed that she is ready to die at the hands of kidnappers if it brings peace to Nigeria.
She urged Nigerians to make sacrifices to end banditry and kidnapping, refusing to pay ransoms.
The governor’s wife made the remarks in Kaduna as she addressed participants in a peace and security training, organized for Kaduna women by Equal Access International (EAI), on Wednesday.
Ms. El-Rufai, who emphasized that she should not be paid a ransom if she is kidnapped, added that “we must sacrifice ourselves to end this. I am willing to die at the hands of kidnappers if that brings peace to this country.
“As long as I continue to pay the ransom, it is as if you are adding kerosene to the fire. you are giving money to bandits, kidnappers to keep stalking you. We shouldn’t pay a ransom. This is my personal opinion.
“I have said it before and I will say it again if I am kidnapped, don’t pay any ransom. Rather, pray for me that if it is death, I will go well and if they are going to release me that they do not rape me.
“As long as we give them the money and they hurt the people around them, they won’t change. Collectively as a country, we have to say no, that we cannot continue to give them our hard-earned money to buy weapons and drugs to kill and maim our children. If we don’t end this, they will destroy us all. They will even kidnap the person who takes the ransom from them.
“You will see that some of them you even give the ransom and they still kill the person, so you have lost twice,” she said.
