The United States (US) has shipped more than 3.5 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to the country, A statement issued Thursday by the United States Embassy said that the United States Mission in Nigeria is pleased to announce the arrival of 3,577,860 doses of the Pfizer vaccine for the public health and benefit of the Nigerian people through COVAX, the global initiative that guarantees equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines.

The statement further said that the US shipment arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on October 14, According to the release, the shipment will bring the total number of doses donated bilaterally by the US to Nigeria to more than 7.5 million, noting that the US also contributed to the first multilateral donation of the AstraZeneca vaccine in March. 2021, which means that overall, COVAX has provided Nigeria with more than 10 million doses to date.

The statement said that: “Safe and effective vaccines are our best tool to end the pandemic. The United States has pledged to purchase and donate 1.1 billion doses of the COVID-19 vaccine worldwide and, to date, has delivered more than 180 million doses to more than 100 countries. ”

The continued efforts of the United States government to provide vaccines to African Union (AU) member countries help fulfill President Biden’s commitment when he said: “The United States is committed to providing equal urgency to international vaccination efforts. that we have demonstrated at home. We are sharing these vaccines to save lives and lead the world to end the pandemic. ”

The statement said these vaccine donations are part of the US government’s continuing partnership with the Nigerian government to combat COVID-19. To date, the US government has provided $ 130 million in support to the Nigerian Ministry of Health and the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19. The US government looks forward to continuing coordination with Nigeria and its Center for Disease Control to deliver life-saving doses across the country through the COVAX initiative.
