With the political permutations of 2023 in focus, Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle may have finalized plans to leave the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC), but there are far more serious reasons why their defection might be impossible by now.

The reason is that the decision of the Supreme Court, which ceded the government of Zamfara to the PPD immediately after the 2019 elections, did not consider any individual to reach the decision but the party, a situation that makes the opposition party the owner and sole beneficiary of the governorate and not Matawalle.

Arrangements for the governor to move to the APC on June 12 are said to have already been finalized, where he is expected to be received by the chairman of the ruling party’s Provisional National Committee and Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni.

Also, as a prelude to desertion, Matawalle had dismissed his entire cabinet on Monday, May 31, including commissioners, special advisers, the State Secretary of Government, the Chief of Cabinet, and the Deputy Chief of Cabinet in others to be able to give some APC members can be accommodated in the new calculations.

The removal of the cabinet was to prevent some commissioners from refusing to defect with him and to avoid the kind of backlash experienced in Ebonyi and Cross River states, where some commissioners and aides refused to go to the APC with their former directors.

Interestingly, however, the PDP’s National Labor Committee (NWC) has yet to officially speak about the unfolding story, but an informed party source hinted that having handed over all political structures in the state to the governor, the PDP was lost. . as to why Matawalle wanted to leave the party.

But the source trusted that the governor would not play with the idea, knowing that the seat belongs to the party and not his, which is why it is said that the lieutenant governor declined to be part of the desertion plan since he would be the only beneficiary. of Matawalle’s wrong move if he finally dared the consequences.

The governor’s planned defection was due to the 2023 policy. It emerged that the governor was promised a return ticket to 2023. He is currently serving his first term in office.
In 2019, the APC won all the state and national elections in the state of Zamfara, the PPD came in second place, but due to the Supreme Court ruling, the PPD inherited the victory across the board.

The state was considered an APC state and thus, to ensure his re-election in 2023, Matawelle was being poached to defect to APC.
Another party source also hinted that “There is no free ticket for him in the APC for 2023, as former state governor Abdulazizi Yari and Senator Kabir Marafa have reconciled and will surely give him a fight.”
But a PDP source said the APC in Zamfara state was like an infected water shark, waiting to consume the governor if he made the mistake of defecting to the APC.

In February this year, the political dispute between the two warring camps in the APC state chapter, Yari and Marafa, was reconciled by the party’s national provisional committee as part of the 2023 conspiracy.
The source said he was not sure if all the PPD senators and members of the House of Representatives who benefited from the Supreme Court ruling would be willing to defect with him as well.

According to the source, “if the governor deserts, what will happen to Senator Marafa’s ambition for governor? Will he submit his ambition that caused his initial political feud with former Governor Yari or will he return to the Senate? If he decides to go to the Senate, what will happen to the current PDP senator? ”Affirmed the PDP source.

Yari, the immediate former governor of Zamfara is plotting to become APC’s national president and has been in the crosshairs of Matawalle, who became an unexpected beneficiary of the APC crisis in the state’s 2019 primaries.

The source who spoke to reporters said Mattawlle was expected to join the APC on June 12 as a democracy dividend for the state.
So far, two PDP governors have joined the APC. The first to get rid of the PDP was Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi, and recently Cross River State Governor Ben Ayade followed, with Matawelle already in sight if he defected as planned.

However, it is said that Yari is not experiencing anything random, as he still has the ace in the state.
But one source claimed that to weaken Yari, all APC state structures in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory would soon be dissolved.

When  PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, said, “I will see the National Chairman and thereafter contact you”, but he did not eventually get, even though sources claimed the opposition party was waiting for Matawalle to make the biggest mistake of his life.

A PDP source said the party was in possession of an intelligence report that the Zamfara governor had gone as far as seeking the opinions of some Supreme Court justices, who had told him leaving the PDP would definitely cost him the seat, based on the Supreme Court judgment of 2019.
But the governor was said to have contacted some highly placed persons in the government and party, who had allegedly assured him that they would circumvent the law for his sake and ensure he did not lose the seat.
